North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan's campaign has led the Government to commit to improving military accommodation, pushing it to meet the decent homes standard.

The tireless efforts of MP Morgan have pushed the Government to focus on the living conditions of servicemen and women.

Last week, the MP tabled an amendment to the Renters Reform Bill.

This amendment was aimed at ensuring that everybody serving in the forces and their families have access to decent standard accommodation.

Minister Jacob Young announced this week, in parliament, that the Government plans to make service accommodation compliant with the decent homes standard.

This announcement followed a praise of MP Morgan's continued effort on this issue.

Given her title of a 'doughty campaigner' by Defence Minister James Cartlidge, MP Morgan has alerted the Government towards some appalling housing conditions for service personnel.

The MP highlighted a number of instances where constituents living in military accommodation faced substandard living conditions, including a case at Clive Barracks where soldiers lived in 'rat-infested' rooms with up to six occupants.

Another case saw Olympic skier Charlie Guest and her RAF partner without running water and heating due to delayed repairs.

Also, at RAF Shawbury, families have been relocated temporarily due to leaks, mould, and even a water tank explosion.

The MP had previously met with various parties, including the MoD and the companies involved in maintaining the accommodation - Amey and Pinnacle, in Wem to discuss the urgent need for improved standards and diligent repairs.

MP Young has also acknowledged the need for improvements in monitoring and reporting.

The Department which covers housing has committed to work closely with the Ministry for Defence to implement these changes.

North Shropshire's Liberal Democrat MP Morgan said: "I’m very pleased that the Government has listened to my proposal and pledged to improve military accommodation.

"I will do everything I can to make sure this becomes a reality.

"Shropshire’s military families deserve the very best, but too often have to put up with unacceptably poor housing.

"We have far too many cases just here in North Shropshire where repairs have been left incomplete, mould and damp have taken over houses, and rats have infested barracks.

"It is nothing short of a national scandal and one which needs urgent action."

She committed to keep campaigning until her constituents at Shawbury and Tern Hill, and all the affected families across the country, receive the high-quality accommodation and treatment they deserve.
